Protect Yourself From Uninsured Drivers
Even though Georgia law requires drivers to carry liability car insurance, there are many drivers who operate their cars without insurance, whether it’s because they can’t afford it, they’ve accidentally let their policy lapse, or they don’t think they need it. The Insurance Information Institute reports that 12% of Georgia drivers are uninsured. We expect this number to rise dramatically due to the financial strain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
A Missing Piece
Georgia law only requires drivers to carry liability insurance, which is insurance that covers any costs related to an accident that you are responsible for. If you get hit by a driver who doesn’t have this insurance, then you might not be able to get any money to help pay for the damages. This is why we recommend that all our clients get uninsured motorist (UM) coverage.
Having UM coverage can make a huge difference if you are in an accident and the at-fault driver doesn’t have car insurance. In Georgia, UM coverage can also help pay for damages or medical bills if you’re the victim of a hit-and-run. This coverage can help pay any medical bills for injuries you or your passengers have suffered. It may also potentially reimburse you for lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.
Most drivers don’t have UM coverage simply because they don’t know to ask for it. In Georgia, UM coverage is not required by law, so your insurance agent may not mention it when setting up your policy. This is troubling because once you sign up for car insurance, adding UM coverage usually only costs a couple bucks a month. Having this coverage is well worth the cost, especially if you need to pay tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills due to an accident caused by an uninsured driver.
Not sure if you have UM coverage? Call your insurance agent and ask. If not, have it added to your policy right away.
